Sorry to stray from the normal home projects today. But I wanted to share something that has been on our minds a lot lately and it has to do with the title of the post, being prepared… This can mean a lot of things plus everyone can look at it differently and sometimes we can not be prepared. But lately with everything that has been going on, we have been thinking are we truly prepared for a natural disaster in our area, a financial problem, or everyday life?
The past couple of years (really the last couple of weeks) we have been feeling the need to build a better food/water supply, get on a better budget to save money for a rainy day, create some 72-hour kits, have an emergency car kit, and create a first-aid kit. WOW, what a list… Sometimes it feels overwhelming, does it for you?
But its time to face the facts, we want to be prepared for the just in case. This hit home the other day, we were on vacation with some friends when their son took a spill on the road and took a nail to the hand. There was some blood involved and luckily our friends were prepared by grabbing their first-aid kit from their car before heading out for the day. I know this is a simple story but it was a big slap in the face to me, what if it was my kid? I would have not been prepared and would have had no idea what was in my very little car first-aid kit. Plus, I do not even have a first-aid kit at home, just the standard band-aids.
So things will be shifting on the blog. We will still be doing home project but we plan on cutting back on them to save money (sad day, I am still trying to come to terms with it). Some of the money that we save will be put away in hopes that next year we can start finishing our basement, YAY!! And some will be going into a rain day fund plus we have to have a travel fund because we need to enjoy life. These are the things we feel are important to our family (finish basement, save money, and travel).
And because every post needs a picture here is our storage room (in the basement) a little while after we moved into the house, this room is a disaster area right now….
But to help us save even more money will be cracking down on our budget. We have always budgeted but the past couple of year we have been very soft with it. Which means I plan on sharing our budgeting tips on the blog.
Then last but not least, we are going to start building our EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS (this will be the title of the series). To do this we will be building up our supply of food/water, 72-hour kits, car kit, and first-aid kits (a large one and some small ones). I will be sharing all this info after we create our kits on the blog. With our food/water, we plan on putting some $$ toward it until we are comfortable with what we have (last year we did purchased a months worth of food from Daily Bread, now we are building the water supply).
So if you are interested in being more prepared in your life for the unexpected, come along on this journey. We would love to hear your thought or ideas on being more prepared, PLEASE share!
