DIY Ceiling Light
MATERIALS:
- Uno Threaded Keyless Lamp Socket
- 4” Shade Holder
- Glass Ball with 4” Neck
- 1-1/2” Hollow Nipple
- Straight Cylinder Threaded Coupling
- Canopy
- 1” Steel Washer
- Slip Star Lock Washer
- Hex Head Nut
- Wire
- Canopy Crossbar Kit (comes with crossbar, studs, and acorns nuts)
- Light bulb
TOOLS:
- Screwdriver
- Utility Knife
- Pliers
STEP 1: Begin the Assembly
Start by threading the keyless lamp socket onto the shade holder.
STEP 2: Attach Hollow Nipple
Thread the hollow nipple into the straight cylinder and then onto the lamp socket.
STEP 3: Break Down the Lamp Socket
Remove the top piece of the lamp socket.
STEP 4: Insert Hollow Nipple onto Canopy
Place the hollow nipple onto the canopy.
Then thread a washer, star lock nut washer, and hex nut onto it. Tighten securely.
STEP 5: Prepare the Light Socket
Remove the middle piece of the light socket – this is where you will attach the wires.
Unscrew the screws on the sides of the socket to prepare for wire attachment.
STEP 6: Prepare and Attach Wires
Twist your wires to ensure they’re not frayed. Make a loop (hook) in the wire to make it easier to attach to the screw.
Hook the wire onto the screw and tighten, ensuring the wire goes in the direction you’re screwing to secure it tightly.
STEP 7: Reassemble Light Socket
Put the middle piece back into the socket and thread the wire through the other pieces you just attached.
Tighten everything back together on the socket.
STEP 8: Prepare for Installation
Remove some of the insulation from the wire to prepare for installation.
This doesn’t need to be fully removed, just enough to connect the wire.
STEP 9: Install the Crossbar Kit
Attach the crossbar from the kit to your desired light location.
Thread the acorn nut onto the crossbar.
STEP 10: Attach the Bulb
Finally, attach your light bulb to the shade holder, completing your DIY ceiling light.
This light cost less than $65 to build from scratch.
