We got to take a break from the windows and working outside to repaint some basement walls. My sister is coming to live with us and the green/blue walls needed to go. But we wanted to make sure we were saving us a step down the road and waterproof the walls.
After cleaning out the room we could start. First, we cleaned the walls by using a steel brush to remove all the old paint that was chipping then wiped the wall with a wet cloth. We then needed to fill in all the holes/cracks in the walls.
How do you fill holes/cracks in a cinder block wall? You use Hydraulic Cement, this stuff is used if you have water leaking through your cinder block foundation. You also use it if you have holes because it will help prevent water from coming into your home.

After following the instructions on how to mix the cement, we lightly strayed the wall with water (using a spray bottle). Then applied the cement to the holes. See the big hole by the arrow and I was filling in another big hole.
I used a paper bowl to mix the cement and a putty knife to apply the cement. TIP: The cement dries quickly so only mix enough that you can apply within 2 minutes.
The paint that we decided on using was Behr Basement & Masonry Waterproofer.
PROS: This paint has many different colors to choose from (we picked the standard gray color) and of course it waterproofs your cinder block foundation.
CONS: This paint is thick and was exactly enough to paint our two walls.
I cannot wait to finish the basement but for now this will have to do…
